History

Though the town’s buildings give the impression of recent times, Gullane is actually a very old village. Its ruined church was dedicated to St Andrew in the 12th century. As for the name of the village, some people suggest that it was derived from “Guallan”, the Scottish Gaelic for “shoulder” maybe with the Gullane Hill in mind. Other historical documents also record its name as “Golyn”, which means a small lake taken from an adjoining piece of water that has since been drained.

In 1650, it was recorded that handloom weavers from the neighbouring villages of Aberlady and Dirleton met over the links at this town for the golf match they held every year on Auld Handsel Monday.

This building was constructed in 1901 using the design made by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Its gardens, which have beautiful Gullane flowers and plants, were designed by Gertrude Jekyll.
