Historical Attractions
The Elvingston House stands as one of the more important historical structures in the area. The surrounding parkland and woodland, as well as the gardens make Elvingston a site of importance. Flowers in Elvingston abound in the gardens, particularly daffodil varieties.
The Historic Scotland Data Services gives Elvingston value as a Work of Art thanks to the layout of the south parks and the past records of the gardens. They also give historical value to the place – even if it doesn't have any historical records – because it had associations with Sir David Lowe. Also, thanks to Lowe's development of some daffodil varieties, the site itself is considered of horticultural value. The home also has a very high architectural value thanks to many interesting features.
Located three miles from Haddington, Elvingston House is set about 90m above sea level. It is situated in a flat agricultural landscape that was reclaimed from marshland. Bounded by shelterbelts and the minor road that borders the east side and leads to Longniddry from the A1, extensive views of the fields and woodlands lend Elvingston its beauty.
It was in the first half of the 19th century that the designed landscape was laid out. Based on the map from 1853, the layout of the place remains the same. Although the second map from 1900 did show more parkland trees compared to the first.
The designed landscape stretches 205 acres with the house facing south across the south park and has extensive views of both the north and south areas.
There really aren't records pertaining to Elvingston House and no known designers were involved with it as well. Very little is known about the history of the property as there are no known documents or plans available. What is known is the mansion was owned by the Ainslie family until 1944. Sir David Lowe – whose family farmed around the neighbourhood – bought the farm and mansion in 1944.
The land was then dedicated to market gardening and fruit production. Breeding daffodils was one of Lowe's passions and this has created a distinctive character for the place. After Lowe died in 1980, the property passed to Mayfield Estates Co. It has been leased for residential use, but since June 1987 it has been listed as for sale.
