Flower Delivery to Mochrum with Clare Florist
Mochrum is a civil and Church of Scotland parish located on the south western coast of Scotland, in the council area of Dumfries and Galloway. Luce Bay is located to the west of Mochrum, which is right on the Machars peninsula. It’s about thirteen kilometres southwest of Wigtown, which is in the Galloway portion of Scotland. This parish contains a village also known as Mochrum, and Port William, and Clachan of Elrig.
This small village is about sixteen kilometres long and eight kilometres wide. In Scottish Gaelic, the name is Magh-dhrium, which means “the ridge of the plain”.
There are many notable ruins and buildings in the village. The local church is called Kirk of Mochrum, with the word “kirk” meaning “church” in Scottish. This small church is in a rectangular shaped building with several windows and a small grassy graveyard to the side. It is known that ten of these are war graves, but it’s uncertain who is in the five others.
Apparently this current building was built on the site of an older church, which originally stood since the 12th century. The first church burned down during a fire in the 1770s. The building that remains today was finished in 1794, and followed the same rectangular shape as the original building. In 1840, the church underwent extensive construction.
There used to be a Sir John Dunbar of Mochrum who died at the Battle of Flodden in 1513. He was married to Janet Stewart and they had a son Gavin Dunbar (1490 to 1547) who became the Archbishop of Glasgow in 1524.
Located in Mochrum is Drumwalt, a fortified medieval manor house, on Castle Island. There is also the Myretown Castle on the Monreith Estate on the border of Mochrum. Sir William Maxwell owned the castle and then his family built Monreith House. There may have been an older castle present on the island before it was rebuilt.
There are many manmade landscape features to indicate that early humans settled in the region. Prehistoric forts, earthworks, and standing stones show signs of early settlements. Barsalloch Point shows the oldest human settlement dating back to 6000 BC. There is also an Iron Age fort at the Doon of May Hill.
At Corwall Point are the remains of Chapel Finian. This chapel was built around the 10th or 11th century. The name comes from Saint Finian who went to school at Whithorn and then died around 579 AD. It’s believed that Irish pilgrims may have landed here to visit his shrine. Timothy Pont was the first Scottish map maker and on one of his maps he called it “Chappel Finan”.
There are other notable landscape characteristics in the town, including the Druchtag Motehill, a steep sided mound and hill which has the remains of a castle on it.
