Flower Delivery to Newton Abbot by Clare Florist
Newton Abbot is a market town in Devon, England which grew popular over time for its annual Cheese and Onion Fayre held in honour of Saint Leonard. More specifically, it is situated at the head of the stunning Teign estuary and boasts a scenic vista of the river Lemon meandering through a town center filled with Newton Abbot flowers. One pride of the market town is its history. It may not have a lush history as much as the other towns, but there were still so much interesting events that only Newton Abbot can be proud of.
During WWII, Newton Abbot sustained 2 bombings from air raids, which killed a total of 21 townspeople. The aftermath left the rest of the town struggling. And in 1979, a severe flood disrupted town activities when the Lemon River burst its banks following prolonged, heavy rainfall. Even so, Newton Abbot was still able to flourish for 30 long years with its stock car track attracting drivers and fans from all over Southern England. Its short 300-metre oval track features car races not just of “bangers” and saloons but also of the famous BriSCA organization.
Built in 1871, the Alexandra Theatre had undergone several refurbishments through the years before it finally became the 2-screen cinema that it is today. Currently, it is being used for live stage performances with a seating of not more than 177.
The main feature of the town, the ancient tower of St. Leonard is all that remains of St. Leonard’s medieval chapel which was founded in 1220. Adjacent to the tower is a plaque which marks where William III, Prince of Orange read his first declaration back in 1688. In the town’s corner is the Old Forde House which was built in 1610 by Richard and Lucy Reynell. What makes it an important structure? In 1625, it was where King Charles I spent nights over while doing a fleet inspection at Plymouth. In 1646, the Forde House sheltered Colonel Fairfax and Oliver Cromwell who were out to besiege Royalist Dartmouth. And in 1688, it became a temporary home for Prince William of Orange, who was on his way to his coronation in London.
Located at Newton Abbot’s opposite end is the Bradley Manor, a 15th century manor house with a secluded woodland setting. It has a notable main hall adorned with the royal coat of arms of Elizabeth I.
As the town is graced with a lot of striking parks, sightings of moors and flowers in Newton Abbot are simply endless! For the sports enthusiasts, there’s the Forde Park with its tennis court. Nature lovers, on another note, are sure to love the Decoy Park with its scenic lake view, the Bakers Park which emerged popular for its fields, and the Courtenay Park which is beautifully decorated with colourful array of plants, shrubs and flowers in Newton Abbot.
