HISTORY
The Saxons occupied the central region of Devon after 682 AD. The area was divided into vast estates with one of the divisions being the land within the boundaries of the rivers Teign and Bovey. Mor Tun served as the major settlement.
In the Domesday Book, the manor of Moreton, along with neighbouring manors, supported around 5,000 sheep. Wool, as well as the manufacture of woollen cloth, was the basis of the economy of the town for more than 700 years. The town's economy was quite healthy during the time a water-powered fulling mill was established before the end of the 13th century.
King John granted a weekly market and annual five-day fair in 1207 AD. The town grew through the Middle Ages and remained prosperous until the end of the 17th century, which was when the wool industry started to decline. However, the town still continued to be a local trading centre and a rest stop for travellers on difficult routes across Dartmoor as well as those from Exeter and Newton Abbot.
Although a series of fires in the 20th century destroyed much of the ancient buildings in Moretonhampstead, there are still sufficient enough to showcase Saxon and medieval heritage, as well as the later industrial prosperity.
A large portion of the town is designated as a conservation area, with several buildings being listed for architectural and historic interest.
ATTRACTIONS
There are lots of places of interest in Moretonhampstead and more near its borders. Whether you're interested in ancient structures or just want to enjoy a weekend holiday, here are some of the sites you get to see in town:
The Cross Tree – immortalised in the 1882 novel Christowell by R.D. Blackmore. However, what remains is a cross without its shaft and is enclosed near the almshouses. The popular dancing tree – where lads and lasses would dance – is long gone and is replaced by a beech tree.
Almshouses – located behind the Cross Tree. They are built in solid granite and they are about 200 years old or even older. The almshouses fell into disrepair in 1938 and were purchased by the National Trust in 1952.
St Andrew's Church – dedicated to St Andrew with a history tracing back to the mid-15th century. It's a Grade I listed building.
