Flower Delivery Hallsands, Devon with Clare Florist
If you’re looking for evidence on how man’s interference with nature leads to havoc, a trip to Hallsands in the south of Devon should be an eye-opening experience. On 26 January 1917, disaster struck the tiny fishing village as a storm flooded houses and caused so much destruction. While storms are natural weather occurrences, the loss of homes could have been prevented.
A century ago, there was a plan to extend the naval dockyard located at Plymouth. It was to be done by taking sand and gravel from Hallsands’ seabed and taking it up the coast. And so that act commenced during the spring of 1897 and continued for four years. During that span of time, around 660,000 tonnes of material were removed from Hallsands. The ramifications of this action would manifest more than a decade later.
You can see the damage caused by the storm from the new village that was built high up the cliffs. The structures that were ruined still stand there as a testament to man’s meddling with nature. Events of 1917 caused many to move away to settle somewhere else.
The catastrophic event of 1917 hit Hallsands hard and history almost repeated itself in 2014 when the village was once again ravaged by a storm. This time, not much damage was caused to the houses but the sand and shingle from the beach, which served as a defence against the sea, was gone. Residents used their own money to repair sea defences but years later, the village and its residents are still at threat from the sea.
A visit to Hallsands is an eye-opening experience and should serve as a warning to man about interfering with nature.
Not everything is sad in south Devon
Although the story of Hallsands may leave you feeling a bit low, a simple look around will show you that there is still much beauty to be appreciated. Situated by the coast, the area is great for walks. You can even treat this little adventure outdoors as a romantic outing and show your appreciation to your date by giving them Hallsands flowers. You can even increase the romance factor by getting flowers in Hallsands to present to them during a break from your walk.
For an even better walking adventure, you can drive down to Beesands and start your journey from the seafront car park to embark on the South West Coast Path. The route is about 2.2 miles (3.5 kilometres) long and it features wildlife and coastal views. The cliff in Hallsands serves as a breeding colony for kittiwakes but other creatures such as the brown and white guillemot, the black-and-white-headed razorbill, and kestrels can also be spotted here. The South West Coast Path is a circular route which will take you back to Beesands.
