HISTORY
In the Domesday Book, Clyst St Mary is listed as Bishop's Cliste. The village was where a decisive battle in the 1549 Prayer Book Rebellion took place. It was here where the resistance of the West Country to the Protestant Reformation was subdued.
On 4 August 1549, rebels under the command of Humphrey Arundell re-grouped with their main contingent in the village of Clyst St Mary after the Battle of Woodbury Common. However, an army led by Sir William Francis and under the command of John Russell, 1st Earl of Bedford, attacked them on 5 August.
An extreme battle took place where the troops of Russell gained an advantage. As a result, a thousand Cornish and Devonians perished and a lot were taken prisoner. Later, those taken prisoner were massacred at Clyst Heath.
Clyst St Mary was burned and a lot of those who fought in the war drowned in the river.
