HISTORY
Evidence of prehistoric activity in the area includes standing stones from the Bronze Age, burial sites and the remains of a stone circle.
The name Weyley or Weylegh is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word weg leah, which means “clearing by the road.”
For his faithful service to Edward, the Black Prince, William Joddrell was given the lands of Weyley and Yeardsley in 1351. By the 14th century, this was where the family and descendants of Joddrell lived and continued to call it home for centuries.
In 1863, the first local government was formed and the town became an urban district. This is also the time when the town took the popular name Whaley Bridge and it has been that way ever since.
The Industrial Revolution saw the town expand greatly. By 1871, cotton mills became the dominant industry, despite the presence of coal mines.
