Peveral become the owner of many different manors in this area and one of the most notable ones is the Nottingham Castle.
Throughout the history, the villagers of Shirland were mostly involved in agriculture. Things have changed a little bit in the middle of the 19h century when some people started practicing framework knitting. Shortly after that, the first mine in the village was opened and this mine become the number one employer in the area. This led to an increased number of people who lived in this village. The mine has significantly affected the development of Shirland and surrounding villages. The mine was closed in 1965 and it is now replaced with a golf course.
