Flower Delivery to New Houghton with Clare Florist

New Houghton is a small village located in Derbyshire, in the central region of England, within Pleasley Parish. Together with Pleasley Parish, there are over 2700 people living here. New Houghton is administered by the District of Bolsover.

The village is about five kilometres from the towns of Bolsover and Mansfield. Besides New Houghton, Pleasley Parish includes Pleasley, Pleasley Vale and Stony Houghton.

New Houghton began as a coal mining village after the Pleasley Pit was opened in 1874. New Houghton was built in the 1890s, so that it could house workers for the Pit. The coal miners would work the nearby Pleasely Pit at Pleasely Colliery. It’s located northwest of Pleasley village, on the north bank of the River Meden. The ruins of the buildings and equipment are still in place.

The pit closed in 1983, and the colliery closed in 1986, with most of the infrastructure being removed. Coal mining continued on in the nearby Shirebrook Colliery. There are still two headstocks remaining, the engine-house complex that contains two steam winders that were originally used to transport coal, and a building with a forty metre high brick chimney. The site has been scheduled as an ancient monument, and presently is a listed grade 2 building. It’s currently owned by the Land Trust.

After residual coal was extracted, the pit tip was landscaped to make a nature reserve. There are many footpaths and lakes. The old railway tracks have been converted in a cycling trail which links to other collieries in the west and Hardwick Hall.

The Anthony Bek school was originally built in 1884, and it held one hundred students. It was meant to serve the Pleasley and New Houghton regions. Anthony Bek had originally been a Lord of the Manor of Pleasley in 1293. He had also been the Bishop of Durham in 1283. Today, the school is still standing, and is being used as a primary school, while older secondary students go to Shirebrook Academy.

The village used to have a small Christ Church on Rotherham Road, but it’s now closed. The New Houghton Community Centre is located beside the church, and is run by the Pleasley Parish Council.

The village has its own football team, and they play regularly in a Sunday league. Their home ground is on a full-size football pitch that is beside the former Working Men’s Club.

The village also has a large open green space called the Millennium Green. This was built in 2000 to celebrate the new millennium, and was designed to make an overgrown field look more attractive. The park has an old pit head wheel from the Colliery, to remind the village of its coal mining past.

There is a footbridge for pedestrians that links New Houghton to Pleasley, so they can avoid crossing the A617. Beyond this bridge are some long-distance recreational routes and trails.
