Fletchertown is a small village of 548 people, located in the Allhallows civil parish. It’s located in the county of Cumbria, in the northwestern portion of England. Allhallows is the civil parish of the Allerdale district in Cumbria. It’s also included the the 548 census total. Allhallows includes the village of Fletchertown, as well as Baggrow, Harbybrow, and Watchhill. While Fletchertown is small, it’s noted for having the largest concentration of people.
Parts of Cumbria used to be called Cumberland. It had an administrative function from the 12th century, to 1974. Today it is a part of Cumbria. The word Cumberland was first found in a document from 945. Around the time of the 1086 Domeday book, it was part of Scotland. It passed back and forth between English and Scottish Kings a couple of times, until the permanent border between England and Scotland was declared by the Treaty of York in 1237. Cumbria now resides on the English side.
Fletchertown is inland, away from the coastline. It was a small town that had originally been built to house people who worked at the local coal mine. It was founded in the 1870s by William and Isaac Fletcher, owners of the coal mine business. Prior to this time, the region was mostly farmlands.
The coal mine was abandoned many years ago, but travellers can still see the site where it was located. There are many spoil heaps that still remain. The locals call this area “the pit bank”.
The first church was the Wesleyan Chapel, which was built in 1898, along with shops, and a school. The school ended up closing in 1984. Today, the building is now used as the local community centre. This building is made from brick, and has a brick wall surrounding it. It’s right off the A595 road that runs between Cockermouth and Carlisle, or the A596. There is a large car park for visitors, and a small field where people can enjoy picnics or other recreational activities. The centre is run by volunteers, and they have a main hall that is suitable for weddings, as well as two smaller rooms for other meetings and functions.
Sadly, most of the shops shut down after the coal mine did, putting most of the town’s population out of work in the 1920s. Most people who live in Fletchertown now commute to other locations around the county for work.
The nearest church is right in Fletchertown, and is called Allhallows Church. It’s made from red brick, and has a short tower with windows. There is a small gravesite beside the building. It was built in 1899, to replace the chapel that had been built for the villager’s first residents.
