Crackenthorpe Hall
A large ancestral homes sits in Crackenthorpe called Crackenthorpe Hall. It belonged to the Machell family and was built before the fifteenth century. Over the years, it has faced a number of alterations.
During the Battle of Hexam in 1464, King Henry VI sought refuge at Crackenthorpe Hall when the Lancastrians were defeated by the Yorkists. He was the guest of the Machell's and was said to spend his time gardening while at the house.

According to legend, the ghost of Peg Sleddal (Elizabeth Sleddal who married Lancelot Machell) rose a carriage with six horses through Crackenthorpe when the Helm wind blows down from the Pennines in September.
Now, the house is available for rent and can accommodate up to 27 people. It's now a Grade II listed property.

The Roman marching camp in Crackenthorpe is unusually situated – its upon the line of the Roman road between Kirkby Thore and Brough Castle. This line originally passed about 200 feet outside of the north-eastern defences of the camp and on the same alignment as the disused railway cutting.
The A66 road passes by the north-eastern half of the camp while Powis Cottage lies inside the south-eastern defences and the minor road to Long Marton cuts across the eastern corner angle.
