Flower Delivery to Leadgate with Clare Florist
Located in County Durham in the north of England, Leadgate is a village that is found to the north east of Consett. One of the most striking attractions in the local area is the Roman road of Dere Street, which can be found running directly through the heart of Leadgate. In modern times, this road is recognised as the B6309 and the Durham Road.
The first time that Leadgate was recognised as the name of the location came in 1590, and it is believed that the name derives from “hildgeat”, which Old English for “swing gate”. A notable moment in the history of the local area came when the parish church was built. St Ives was constructed back in 1865 with the work being completed by 1868. In the nearly village of Blooms, there was a Roman Catholic church constructed at the same time. The Church of Our Blessed Lady and St Joseph was constructed between 1866 and 1869 by E W Pugin, and it was primarily used by the migrant Irish community, although the church welcomed all from the RC faith.
Leadgate became known as the home for the employees of the Eden Colliery. The Colliery was opened in 1844 and it remained open until the 18th of July in 1980. The Colliery also played host to the Consett Iron Company and it was one of the mines to suffer at the hands of Margaret Thatcher and the Conservative Government in the 1980s. These days, Leadgate is recognised as being a minor village with a very close-knit community. There have been plans to carry out regeneration work for some time but there are concerns about how to expand the village without losing much of the charm or appeal that the village is well known.
With respect to the current local economy, Front Street is the main hub in Leadgate. Until the Leadgate Bypass was made, this street formed one of the main routes between Consett and Newcastle, which meant that there was a good deal of traffic flowing through it. However, this flow has subsided in more recent times, but there are a number of independent retailers operating on the street to this day.
Leadgate also welcomes the coast to coast cycle path and the path of the route takes the same path that the Stanhope and Tyne Railway used to follow. This line was operational until March 1984, when it was closed down.
With Leadgate falling within County Durham, there is no shortage of local towns and villages within a short distance. The county is known for having a rich mining and farming history, but there has also been a focus on the railway industry, particularly in the southern section of the county. There is no doubt that the area has experienced a great deal of change in the past 3 or 4 decades and there is a major level of regeneration taking place. County Durham is recognised as being a tourist destination with a great level of historical importance, as accreditation from UNESCO indicates.
