Flower Delivery to Castle Eden with Clare Florist

Castle Eden is a tiny village located in County Durham, in England. The last 2011 census recorded that 642 people lived in the village during that time. The closest town to Castle Eden is Peterlee, Wingate. There are many sights in the village, including the Castle Eden Dene which is a National Nature Reserve, and The Castle. The dene grows from the village and all the way to the sea. It contains many yew trees that thrive in its magnesium limestone soil.

The village was named for the Eden Burn, a river that flows through the village. The word Eden is likely derived from the Brittonic word ituna, which means “to gush forth”. It could also be related to the Cambric word Redan, which means flow or run. There is also the word coeden, which means tree or timber.

In the Domesday book of 1086, the village is listed as being small, but there is nothing recorded for a castle. Most likely, there was a castle built before that time, but it fell into ruins until it transferred ownership. In 1764, the estate of Castle Eden was transferred from William Turner to the newer owner, Rowland Burdon. In the records, the estate is listed as having a path, a bridge, and a ruined medieval chapel, all of which lead up to an old ruined manor or castle as it was also called. This portion of the village was called “The Village”.

In 1766, Rowland Burdon, owner, did some work on The Castle, which was also the manor. He added the Regency Gothic wing, which is still present today. The Castle was supposed to have further work done on it by Sir John Sloane, one of the more popular Regency architects on record today, but the owner decided against the plan.

In 1826, the Nimmo family would start the Castle Eden Brewery in the building. They ran their business as J. Nimmo and Son Limited. Other families in the village started other businesses, such as rope works and a sail cloth bleachery, that turned the village into a prosperous industry. But after the Victorian era ended, so did much of these older industries.

Only the front of the Castle building is still in existence today, with offices on the premises, and residential housing along the side.

Today’s Parish Church of St. James, the Parish of Monk Hesleden is now built where the site of the old chapel used to be.
Back in the 1760s, a farm labourer was working in the garden and found an old glass beaker. Today it’s known as the “Castle Eden Beaker” and it’s preserved in the British Museum in London.

The best way to reach Castle Eden is by the A19 road, which travels north to south of the county. The road used to actually run through the village, but was bypassed in the 1970s.
