Flower Delivery to St Ives with Clare Florist
One might be lured to the south-western tip of England by promises of a walk-worthy coastline with interesting sights to see, including miles of dunes, cliffs, and medieval harbours. But St Ives is more than just a place to soak up the sun; it has an equally rich artistic heritage where artists of all kinds came to admire the big skies, the moorland and its boulders, and the light which turns the sea a lovely shade of blue.
History
The early history of St Ives begins with the arrival of Ia of Cornwall, an Irish saint, in the 5th century. Quite a few things bear her name: the town itself (St Ives is derived from it) and the parish church.
St Ives’ history has always been linked to fishing. Pilchards were a main source of income with thousands of casks exported around the 19th century; Italy was where bulk of the catch was sent.
Commercial fishing – seine fishing, the method used by fishermen in St Ives, came to an end in 1924 – is not that much popular but the harbour is still being used for tourist fishing, recreational boating, and day trips to seal colonies on Carrack Rocks and other places along the coast.
The development of St Ives as a seaside resort came about when the St Ives branch line from St Erth was established in 1877 bringing in lots of holidaymakers.
Attractions
Cornwall is home to many glorious gardens, but for those who want to see flowers in St Ives, there are a few to visit around town. The gardens of Tregenna Castle Hotel are a marvellous sight with different St Ives flowers, including peonies and rhododendrons. While hotel residents are free to explore the gardens, visitors need to make arrangements before coming over.
Other gardens around St Ives include Trewyn Gardens, a popular lunching spot; Chy-an-Gweal in Carbis Bay with lots of flowers, shrubs, and trees as well as lovely views that include the Godrevy Lighthouse, an inspiration for Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse; and The Malakoff which provides the best opportunity to capture the St Ives etched in the mind of many.
St Ives is also one of the best places in England to head to for a dose of art. One of the four Tate galleries in the world, The Tate St Ives, is located here and not only offers great art but stunning location as well: it overlooks Porthmeor Beach.
Another art and cultural attraction in town is the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. Hepworth was one of the greatest 20th-century British sculptors and a visit here offers the chance to see her home and garden. It features more than 30 sculptures as well as paintings and drawings.
