Sithney is a small village located in the shire county of Cornwall, in the southwestern region of England. In 2011, the population of Sithney was 836. In Cornish, Sithney is “Merthersydhni”. The village was named after Saint Sithney, who was the patron saint of Sithney Church.
Saint Sithney was the patron saint of mad dogs. He was one of the members of a band of missionaries who went to west Cornwall. An old Breton folk story tells about God asking Sithney to be a patron of girls seeking husbands, but Sithney said he’d prefer getting some rest, and being the patron of mad dogs. This Saint is invoked for help in dealing with dogs with rabies, and the healing of mad dogs. William Worcester (1415 - 1482) was a chronicler of history and wrote that in 1478 the body of Saint Sithney lay within the church.
In 1230, the Sithney Church belonged to the Antrenon family. It has a Norman foundation. The current structure was built after that time, around the 15th century. There used to be an old Norman font, but it was moved to Carnmenellis Church, which is now gone. There are many notable aspects about the church. There is a 13th century coffin slab, as well as a monument to John Oliver (1741). John Rogers is also buried in the church. He was an Anglican priest (1778 - 1856), who was a landowner, mineral lord, and biblical scholar.
There is a bridge across the main road, dating back to 1833. There is also the date of 1861 carved into the stones. There is an even older bridge near Sithney Common Hill. This is the St. Johns Bridge, or Helston Bridge. It was completed in 1260, but only the original central archway is left standing. The other parts of the bridge still remaining date from the 16th century.
Once a year the Sithney Church Flower Festival is held. The Church decorates the inside with plenty of flowers, along with signs about some of the relics.
The Gardens at Trevarno are located near the village, and feature bright colourful flower beds, with green grass, and peacocks. The gardens have been open to the public in the past, but are currently closed.
There is a medieval mansion owned by the Nance family. It forms part of the Truthall farmhouse, dated around 1642. The left wing is modern. The gate piers, Truthall house, and courtyard hall are all listed on the Heritage site. In the 1086 Domesday book, Truthall was listed as encompassing half a hide of land, possibly sixty acres. Truthall was a part of the Winnianton royal manor.
