Cury is a small village and civil parish located in Cornwall, England. It’s located on the Lizard Peninsula, which is the farthest southwestern location in England. It’s about six kilometres south of the town of Helston. It’s not quite on the water, as Gunwalloe is located to the west. To the north is the Mawgan-in-Meneage parish, and Mullion to the south.
Besides the settlements of Cury in Cury Parish, there are also the Cross Lanes, White Cross, and Natithet hamlets.
Cornwall is a county located on the southwestern peninsula. It’s also a unitary authority area. It’s surrounded by the Celtic Sea and is on 3563 square kilometres of land. There are over 536,000 people living in Cornwall.
In Cornish, Cury is spelled Egloskuri, while Cornwall is Kernow. Cornish is in reference to the language and people who spoke this extinct language. Cornish was one of three languages, including Welsh and Breton, that were spoken by the Celtic peoples.
The Domesday book has recorded the Cury village as Chori. It was originally named for St. Corentin, a Breton saint who died in 460 AD. He was also the first bishop of Quimper, which is located in France. The feast day is on December 12th. Corentin was also a saint of Cornouaille, Brittany in France, and the saint of seafood.
There were only 388 people recorded in the 2001 population census as living in this village.
Cury is also considered a church town. The church is dedicated to St. Corentin. It was built with a cruciform or cross shape during Norman times from the 11th to 12 centuries. The church underwent a renovation in the 15th century so a northern aisle could be added.
Winnianton was the manor at the time so likely it was built to be a manorial church. During the 13th century the church became a chapel of the Breage parish.
Sandys Wason served the Cury and Gunwalloe parishes from 1905 to 1920 as perpetual curate. He was an Anglo-Catholic and wrote some poems that are still on record today. There was some controversy over his use of Roman Catholic practices. Despite being disciplined, he refused to change his practices and was eventually ejected from the parish. He then moved to London and ran a publishing firm.
Cornwall is famous for its mines. Brothers Stephen and Richard Davey were involved in the development of some of these mines during the booming times. They bought an ancient manor house and estate in Bochym Manor near Mullion and Cury. Son of Stephen, Joshua Sydney Davey, lived from 1842 to 1909, and inherited the estate.
Cury is located within an AONB—Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This affords it the same protection as a National Park in England. About one third of Cornwall is designated as AONB.
