If there’s one place in Cheshire that anyone would want to call home, Culcheth will be it. And why not? It sits between Manchester and Liverpool, and many of the workers and professionals in these two big cities and nearby areas have made a home in the village. It’s not called a dormitory village for nothing.

Beautiful surroundings sprinkled by vibrant flowers in Culcheth, a lively village centre, quality housing, good schools and a rural setting are just some of the few things that make up the village. It makes a great holiday destination and a place to have a home and start a family.

Looking back

The name Culcheth has several origins. On early maps and deeds, it was written as Kilcheth and Calchuth in others. Words from the British language cil and coed may also have some contributions to the name. There are also claims that Culcheth may have Norman origins.

No matter. It gave a place its identity, and stuck ever since. As mentioned in the Domesday Book, this part of Cheshire is believed to have been established before or around the Norman conquest.

Culcheth was in Lanchashire until 1974 when, by local government reorganisation, it was moved to Cheshire. It became part of the Warrington Unitary Authority when it was formed in 1998.
Four major families that have settled in the village were of French descent, and they took local names, including de Risley, de Holcroft and de Culcheth.

With rich, agricultural land surrounding it on all sides, the village offers picturesque views, complete with colourful Culcheth flowers, making it an ideal residential location. Its proximity to villages with industrial estates and science parks, such as Croft, Glazebrookm Glazebury, Kenyon, and Risley, also contributed to its viability as a great place to start a home.

It also helps that it has excellent transport and road links that make it accessible to and from Liverpool and Manchester via the Warrington (A574) and the M62 motorway. It also links into the Holcroft Lane (the B5212) and the A580 East Lancashire Road via the Common Lane (the B5207 from Lowton).

The dormitory village has a local shopping centre, village centre, and schools.
