HISTORY

Northborough first appears in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle for the year 656 where it's documented as Northburh. The name of the village is also listed as Norburg in an Assize Roll of 1202. Northborough's name means “northern burg or fortified settlement.”

The 1970s marked a period where the village experienced its largest change. This was a time when Northborough expanded thanks to the building of a new estate, and as such, the population grew along with it.

This Grade I listed building is a medieval fortified manor house that was built by Roger Northburgh, the Bishop of Lichfield, between 1333 and 1336. Historian Anthony Emery calls the structure “one of the finest” fortified manors in Cambridgeshire.

Parish Church of St Andrew – located close to the manor house and features sections that date back to the late 12th century. Although there is no gravestone or marker to indicate the case, it is said that Elizabeth Cromwell (widow of Oliver) is buried in this church.
