History

Helpston is both a village and civil parish with the latter covering about 754 hectares. The village's name is of Anglo-Saxon origin which means farmstead (tun) settled by Help (which is an Old English personal name).

Attractions

One of the best way to explore Helpston is by foot. What made John Clare great was translating his observations of the English countryside – particularly during the Enclosure Acts which restricted public access to open fields and common land – into words. A good walking route starts from the cottage where Clare lived and passes through bridleways and winding country lanes. Every mile you walk greets you with the wonders of the village and surrounding areas. Here's a sample walking route:

Start at the stone memorial to John Clare. Walk towards Woodgate where you'll spot a white-washed cottage near the Blue Bell Inn. Clare lived in the part closest to the pub. The John Clare Trust has restored the place into a museum. After that, you can head town to Broad Wheel Road then get on King Street and turn to Hilly Wood which is one of Clare's favourite walking spots.

Another attraction in the area is the parish church, St Botolph. Francis Skeat created the chancel window which depicts Christ in Majesty.

Nearby Attractions

There are some nice attractions located near Helpston, and these include:

Burghley House – one of the greatest Elizabethan houses in England. This 16th-century country house is located near Stamford and is an example of an Elizabethan prodigy house.

Longthorpe Tower – houses one of the most complete – as well as important – sets of 14th-century wall paintings in northern Europe.

Peterborough Cathedral – properly called the Cathedral Church of St Peter, St Paul and St Andrew. The church is a great example of Norman architecture and is mostly known for its popular Early English West Front. Catherine of Aragon, queen of England during Henry VIII's reign, is buried here.
