Flower Delivery to Lybster with Clare Florist

Lybster, also known as Liabost in Scottish Gaelic, is a small village situated on the east coast of Caithness in the northeast part of Scotland.

There are historical sources that have confirmed that Lybster existed more than 1000 years ago. People who lived there were almost exclusively involved in fishing because of the specific terrain in this region that doesn’t allow advanced agriculture. The village was very small, but suddenly started to grow when people started practicing herring fishing. This practice began in the late 18th century. In the beginning of the 19th century a wooden pier was built and Lybster became a real herring fishing center in Caithness. Few years later, Lybster became one of the several recognized British fisheries. At the peak of the expansion, there were more than 250 fishing boats in the harbour and many people from the villages close to Lybster moved there. Unfortunately, the bad weather has ruined the future plans for expansion and several storm-related accidents made many investors to look for other coastal villages. In the beginning of the 20th century the fishing industry in this village started to shrink and the number of people who live there was reduced too.
Another interesting fact about this village is that the Sinclair family of Lybster is a direct descendent of the Sinclairs that have onced ruled Caithness. In addition, Partick Sinclair, a famous British Army officer and governor in North America, was born in Lybster.

Lybster is about 650 miles north of London and it takes an 11-hour drive to get there with a car via A9 and M6 roads. It is about 250 miles north of Edinburgh. The closest train station is in Inverness where people can get on a bus and go to Lybster.
