Flower Delivery to North Crawley with Clare Florist
North Crawley is a village located in Buckinghamshire County, and is a part of the Borough of Milton Keynes. This village is located in the lower central-eastern region of England. In 1197, the region was split into Great Crawley, and Little Crawley, which still exists as a hamlet. North was added to the Great Crawley name in 1398 to avoid confusion with the Town of Crawley in West Sussex. The Church of St. Frimin serves the region.
The name Crawley was derived from the old English word “Crauelai”, and it means “a clearing frequented by crows”. The 1086 Domesday book lists the town with its Old English spelling. The Domesday book also lists a monastery, but after the “Dissolution of the Monasteries” its upkeep was forgotten, and it is long since gone. The monastery was believed to have been built before the days of Edward the Confessor. Roger Tetlow owned a farm in the 1500’s, before his death in 1557.
In 1870ish, the Imperial Gazetteer describes the town as having a population of 981 people. The town was on 4064 acres of land. There were 219 houses. It mentions churches of different denominations, a school, and charities.
In 1927 North Crawley is listed as being on 3366 acres. The village was called “large and scattered”, and makes mention of a Little Crawley chapel. In this village there are 42 woods and plantations listed, 1660 acres of permanent grassy fields, and 1130 acres of arable farm land. The soil is mainly clay, with a clay subsoil too. The main crops in 1927 were oats, beans, and wheat.
The residents of North Crawley enjoy many outdoor leisure activities. There is an official North Crawley Cricket Club, and the North Crawley Bowls Club. Cranfield University’s Walking Society often has evening walks around the North Crawley region. These involve an easy walk for about six kilometres, but much of the region is muddy, without paved paths. Walkers bring torches to navigate in the dark, then meet up in a local pub for refreshment afterwards.
North Crawley was popularized by the song “Hasten the Day” by Jim Lancaster. He wrote the song while living in Burma.
St. Firmin is the local Church of England, and is located on the main road through the village. This 12th century church is listed on the heritage site, but still has active services. It features a square tower with clock, and is kept in good shape. The church sits in the centre of a large churchyard with ancient cemetery. There is a lovely walking path where one can appreciate the scenery after Sunday services.
