Chalfont Common is a small hamlet of 3814 people, located in the county of Buckinghamshire, England. It’s thirty-eight miles to the centre of London. Chalfont Common is located in the Chiltern Hills, that are composed of mostly chalk. This region is “AONB—Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty”, designated in 1965. The Chilterns cover over 833 square kilometres of land.
Chalfont Common is to the north of Chalfont St. Peter, a village. St. Peter’s Parish Church is located here. Chalfont Common is considered one of the largest villages in England, with over 13,000 people. Gerrards Cross is counted together with Chalfont St. Peter for statistics purposes. Chalfont Common is one of three of Chalfont St. Peter’s Commons—the other two being Gold Hill Common, and Austenwood Common.
This hamlet contains a variety of housing. There are some buildings that date back to the 1890s. There are a few small businesses, including a post office, a salon, and a supermarket.
The Epilepsy Society is a charity that had it origins in Chalfont St. Peter. A group of physicians started a society to employ epileptics in 1892. There was a farm in the 1950s that employed and cared for over 550 people. Today, the society works in all aspects of research and charity. In 2011 the society changed its name to the Epilepsy Society.
In 1785, Sir H. T. Gott was responsible for the building of the Gott’s Monument. This monument is in the shape of an obelisk. There may be two reasons why it was built. One is because it commemorates a hunt that George III attended, or it may have been because he got lost in the forest that surrounds the monument. There is a plaque installed on the monument, and it can be read by a rider on horseback.
The plaque lists locations and distances, in miles, to Newland, and Chesham. In 1879, lightning struck the monument and it had to be rebuilt. Apparently the monument was restored in 1879 by W. Brown. This has been added to the plaque, as well as three more distances: London, Denham, and Uxbridge.
In the 1960s, it was struck by lightening again. It had originally been sixty feet, but was reduced down to a safer height of twenty feet. Since then, it’s been on the Grade II listed registry since 1958.
Chalfont Common is located to the east of the River Misbourne. The Misbourne has a narrow portion that runs through Chalfont St. Giles. It joins the River Colne near A40 Western Avenue. Water companies have ensured that the river does not run obstructed, but there have been some flooding issues in Chalfont St. Peter. More work has been done since then, so the River Misbourne flows freely through the county now.
