HISTORY
A Benedictine abbey was founded near the village by Richard, King of the Romans, in 1265. However, this was disbanded by King Henry VIII in the Dissolution of the Monasteries. A contemplative order of Church of England Augustinian nuns have been based in the restored remains of the original abbey since 1916.
The village has a Church of England parish church, St Peter. It dates back to the 12th century and has since been expanded, refurbished and altered. Major restorations were done in 1863-64 and 1891. The Cornerstone Centre was constructed in 1986.
