Flower Delivery to Southbourne, Dorset with Clare Florist
Southbourne is a suburb of Bournemouth in the English county of Dorset. It is located in the eastern part of the Bournemouth borough, between Christchurch and Boscombe. The area was once known as Stourfield. Southbourne formerly refered to the more coastal areas.
Southbourne’s history is traceable to a man called Edmund Bolt. Edmund Bolt built a Georgian mansion to the east of polesdown village which he named the Stourfield house. Mary Eleanor Bowes, Countess of Strathmore and kinghorne is one of the well known personalities to have inhabited the house. Stourfield House was later converted to a care home, providing care to servicemen who were injured from the Great War. Today, only the front steps which lead to a block of flats in Douglas Mews survived. The original building was demolished in 1990.
There was also a short lived pier at Southbourne constructed in the 1980’s at a cost of £4,000 and over 300 feet long. There were regular boat trips between the Southbourne pier and that at Bournemouth. Unfortunately they were damaged extensively by storms and when a buyer for the pier couldn’t be found, it was demolished in 1909 due to public safety concerns.
