Flower Delivery to Streatley – A Village and Civil Parish on the River Thames
Facing Goring-on-Thames, both share shops, services, leisure, sports and even transport. The Goring & Streatley railway station is located across the river. A mixture of agriculture and woodland along with a golf course comprise the west side of the village. In addition, a riverside hotel is also located in the village.
The village of Streatley has steep and varying elevations: it ranges from 51m AOD to 185m at Streatley Warren, a hilltop point located on the western border. It also forms the eastern end of the Berkshire Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Ridgeway, an 87-mile path that crosses the Thames at Goring and Streatley Bridge tops the area off.
HISTORY
A vital crossing point on the Thames, Streatley has been mentioned in the Domesday Book. But the village's history dates even further as Neolithic tools have been discovered at the base of Lough Down. In addition, Bronze age artefacts have also been found in the village. Not only that, the village has a Roman milestone located at the Bull crossroads.
The Morrell family of brewers from Oxford used to own the whole of Streatley. The village was resistant to change and as such, they were spared from the construction of a train line and extra houses (which where built in Goring). In 1926, the mill burned down and wasn't rebuilt; the estate was then sold when Emily Morrell died in 1938. After her death, the village became part of the Royal Veterinary College.
ATTRACTIONS and AMENITIES
The Bull at Streatley – the only public house in the village. The garden of the pub is the burial site of a monk and nun who were executed for misconduct in 1440. The garden also has an ancient yew tree. The pub gets mentioned in Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome.
The Swan at Streatley – a four-star hotel and restaurant that was owned by drag artiste Danny la Rue in the 1970s. The hotel was purchased by Diplomat Hotels of Sweden then sold in 2001 to Nike Group Hotels. The hotel has been owned by entrepreneur Hugh Osmond since 2012. Here, you can be romantic and rent a small electric boat to explore the Thames during the summer. You can even make the boat trip more romantic by getting Streatley flowers for your partner.
