History

The establishment of Purley dates back to the Saxon times. These settlements were scattered to Purley Parva, Purley La Hyde and Purley Magna. The one centred where the church is located was Purley Magna, Purley La Hyde was centred in the now Sulham Home Farm and Purley Hall while Purley Parva was centred on Westbury Farm. For centuries, the ownership of the manors changed and in the 20th century, there came various developments.

Located by the River Thames with an area of 30 acres, this park also holds events throughout the years. Basildon Park – also a Grade I listed building, this renovated country house has a lovely garden and parkland. It is located south of Goring-on-Thames and between upper Basildon and Lower Basildon. Although it changed ownerships over the years, today, the National Trust owns it. The Illifes left the house and park to the National Trust in 1978. Visitors can now have a glimpse of the majestic interior of the house and enjoy the gardens as the go back in history.

Greys Court – also owned by the National Trust, this lovely family home boasts of an idyllic setting and beautiful gardens.  You can tour the mansion and even take pictures of some areas inside. As you go out you can also visit the beautiful gardens filled with colourful blooms and perennials. Lavender lines the path and wisteria plants are just mesmerising to see when in full bloom. There is also a kitchen garden that dates back to World War II and is still productive.
