You can say that Kintbury has the best of both worlds. This village and civil parish located in West Berkshire has a railway system to London and Reading and is near other transportation networks. Yet, despite its proximity to large cities, it has retained its Old-World charm and continues to be a quiet and peaceful haven. If you're looking for a place that's far from the crowds and can help you relax, you definitely won't go wrong with choosing Kintbury.
Kintbury in the Past
The name of the village was spelled “Cynetanbyrig” in the 10th century, during which it was mentioned in the will of Wulfgar, a Saxon thegn or ruler who left some land in the village of Inkpen to a “holy place” (which experts assume was a monastery) at Kintbury. The village was also called “Kenetebury” as well as “Kennet-Byrig”, which mean “Fort on the River Kennet”.
Kintbury was mentioned in the Domesday Book, which noted that the village was under the Lord Amesbury in 1086. According to the Book, Kintbury had a population of 74 households (which were very large at the time) and had 10 ploughlands, a 60-acre meadow, some woodland, and a mill.
In 1267, Kintbury was given the right to have a weekly market as well as two three-day fairs every year. The village continued to grow and prosper, although it became overshadowed by the nearby village of Hungerford as years passed by. Still, it continued to experience economic development over time, particularly during the late 1700s when the Kennet and Avon Canal was built. Kintbury has been largely an agricultural area, although water milling had also been an important industry.
Kintbury in the Modern Times
Today, Kintbury is a quiet village that has become a sort of retreat for those who want to escape the noise of the city without going too far. The area has even been named by the Sunday Times as one of the top 10 most sought-after villages in England in 2007, which signifies that it's an ideal place to live and to visit.
