Flower Delivery to Ampthill, Bedfordshire with Clare Florist

Between Bedford and Luton in Bedfordshire, England is a small town and civil parish known as Ampthill. It has a population of about 6000 and is administered by the Central Bedfordshire Council. There is a regular market which takes place on Thursdays and has operated for centuries.

The name 'Ampthill' has Anglo-Saxon origins with its settlement called 'Aemethyll' which means either 'ant heap'. Ampthill was referred to as 'Ammetelle' in the Domesday Book with the largest holder being Nigel de la vast in 1086.

King Henry VIII visited the Ampthill castle regularly and it was where Catherine of Aragon lived from 1531 to 1533 before moving to Kimbolton after her divorce. The castle is no more, but indications of castle life still remain such as the local ponds which were built to supply the castle with fish. Ampthill is a commercial center for neighboring villages and has several pubs, restaurants, Waitrose supermarket and small independent specialist shops below flats.

There are also small businesses like Solicitors, estate agents, hairdressers, music schools and a bookshop all in the town with larger businesses and industries on the outskirt bypass. There are lots of public amenities such as schools, clinics, fire and ambulance station as well as a police station.

Anpthill's has one of the most expensive homes in Bedfordshire and this largely due to its historic status as well as its well respected schools and facilities. A survey showed majority of Anpthill workers are employed locally with about 20% working in Ampthill itself and the remainder traveling to neighboring towns of Bedford, Luton and Milton Keynes and around 13% commuting to London daily.

The church also contains an eight bell ring and were six until 1981, before the two new balls were installed. Services run weekly, with Sung Eucharist at 9.30AM and Evensong at 6.30PM. Houghton House

Houghton House was built by Mary, Countess of Pembroke in 1621. In 1675, the house provided the inspiration for 'House Beautiful' in John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim's Progress. The work is based on the Bunyan’s journey between Bedford and Luton and the steep slope that leads into Ampthill was the model for the 'Hill of Difficulty'. In 1738, Houghton house passed to the Duke of Bedford and became a ruin following the removal of the roof in 1794.
