Flower Delivery to Saddell in Argyll and Bute

As Scottish villages go, Saddell features the same vast fields of green with flowers in Saddell scattered here and there. This small village is located in the east side of the Kintyre Peninsula of Argyll and Bute. Overlooking the Isle of Arran and the Kilbrannan Sound, a body of water that keeps the island of Arran and the Kingtyre Peninsula separate, you will be treated to a breathtaking view of nature when in Sadell.

History of Saddell

The name Saddell has an interesting origin. It was derived from the Norse for sandy dale, which can be considered a mispronunciation to those unaccustomed to the local language. With the thick brogue, most outsiders can only rely on what the words sound like when trying to understand what a Scottish person is trying to say.

Not much of Sadell's history is shared with the rest of the world. But if there is one thing that its surviving castle would reveal is that it once had a colourful and interesting past.

Saddell Castle

This restored castle was a tower house built for the Bishop of Argyll during the early 16th century. The stones used to build its farm buildings originated from another historical structure — the Sadell Abbey.

In the late 17th century, the clan Campbell, one of the larger Highland Scottish clans, took over the castle and was responsible for adding the farm buildings. When the family moved into a new house in 1774, the castle deteriorated and stayed that way until it was bought by the Landmark Trust. In 1976, this British building conservation charity contracted a Mr Robert R Mauchline to restore the castle. After restoration work was completed, the castle played a starring role in the Mull of Kintyre music video of Paul McCartney.

It was definitely a good thing that the Landmark Trust decided to preserve the castle as it makes a prominent feature when viewed from the shore where the Saddell Water empties into the bay. But because the Landmark Trust rents out the entire castle as a holiday cottage, it cannot be visited by the public. You can, however, explore the nearby attractions, such as the old holy well that features an incised stone and a drinking cup stand.

Saddell Abbey

If there's one thing that Saddell is known for the Saddell Abbey would be it. This Cistercian monastery has been around since the 12th century. Although all that is left of it are ruins of the original structure, it still provides a glimpse of its history. It was established by the first Lord of the Isles, Somerled, around 1160 with monks from the Mellifont Abbey in Ireland.

What makes this abbey a must visit, aside from its surroundings field decorated with Sadell flowers, is the number of medieval grave slabs and effigies, most of which are creations of stone carvers from the so-called Kintyre school. The larger ones were works of the famous 'Iona school'.

Saddell Bay Beach

A sandy beach that can only be reached by foot from the Saddell House and Saddell Castle, nothing could be more exciting than to explore the Saddell Bay Beach. The lack of facilities makes this beach more appealing, especially to people who are looking for an escape from the busy, demanding and fast-paced city life.
