Ballygrant is a wee village located on the western coast of Scotland, on the Isle of Islay and in the council area of Argyll and Bute. It’s the longest noted village on the island. Distilleries have been a popular part of the economy in the past, and the region has connections to Viking times. Ballygrant means “the town of the grain”, which was popular for distilling spirits. A water-powered mill churned oats into meal until the late 1900s. This water wheel was then used to power a sawmill until the late 1960s, when electricity was installed.
Visitors to the village will be interested in visiting the oldest part of the village, at the junction of the A846 Road and Port Askaig, and Port Ellen, and Glen Roads.
Islay is a popular portion of the world, known for its fine malt whisky. There are over 400 different types of whisky produced in this region. There was a meal mill in Ballygrant dating back to 1686, from the record of a rent roll. Barley and oats were both grown in the region. Lossit Kennels was the name of an original distillery, but nothing remains to this day but the record.
In the 17th to 19th centuries Ballygrant was also popular for its mining of silver and lead. A record of Thomas Pennant’s states that lead ore was smelted in an air furnace near Freeport. The Ballygrant mine stopped production in about 1880.

The Kilmenny Parish Church was built in the 20th century and stands on the site near where the old medieval church used to stand. The Old Parish Church Cill a’ Mhanaich stands in ruins, though the cemetery is still in use today. One can still see the fragment of a chapel, and a pillar, possibly the remains of a cross, and additionally some building wall ruins. The lands used to be held by the Bishop of the Isles in 1561.
