Flower Delivery to Montrose with Clare Florist
Montrose is a large town located in Angus, Scotland. It has a population of over 12,000 residents, and is located right on the eastern coast. It used to be considered a royal burgh. It’s located sixty-one kilometres north of Dundee city, and is between the North and South Esk river mouths.
There are been some prehistoric remnants found in town. The Stone of Morphie was located near the north of the Montrose, and is thought to be a standing burial stone for the leader of a Viking army. It’s believed that one of the ancient names for Montrose may have been “Celurca”.
An early record noted that David I founded the town around 1140, and it was called “Sallorch” or “Sallork” back then. The name Montrose could be from “Mouth Hrossay” due to its situation at the mouth of the River Esk. Some people think Montrose could also be derived from the gaelic “Monadh” which means moor, and “Ros” which means a peninsula. Others believe that it could also mean “Mount of Roses” which is present on the town’s seal. The town earned its current form of the name around 1178, with “Munross” which soon became Montrose.
It’s also known that the town used to have some early Norse settlements near the current harbour, and that it was called Stroma by the tribes, which means “tide race river”.
During medieval times, the town was a popular harbour that had a good trade in cured salmon, hides, and skins. Today, the town is still in operation as a port and does a good international trade for the gas and oil industries.
The town has a notable steeple above the Old and St. Andrews Church. The steeple rises sixty-seven metres above the skyline, with a backdrop against water and mountains. The steeple was designed by James Gillespie Graham, who was a popular Scottish architect during the 19th century. The steeple was built from 1832 to 1834.
The town has a wide thoroughfare and high street through its centre, with many secluded gardens. There’s an excellent view of the Montrose Basin, a lagoon that is full of plant and wildlife. It has importance as being the largest salt water basin in the UKm and is a habitat for the mute swan.
There are also many other notable buildings, including the House of Dun. This estate used to be the home for David Erskine, 13th Laird of Dun, and the Erskine family, who lived there from 1730 to 1980. It was built by William Adam, a Scottish architect.
The Montrose Music Festival has been held every year in May since 2008. People nickname it Mo Fest. It’s now the biggest music festival in Scotland, and it involves 200 free gigs over a long weekend, at twenty-six different locations in town. Some concerts are held at the open air stage on the High Street.
