From Australia to Taiwan, Grandparents' Day is celebrated in many different countries across the globe. Since 1990, it has been observed on the first Sunday of October, which means that this Sunday the 6th of October is Grandparent's Day in the UK.
The historical origin of National Grandparents' Day in the USA is actually pretty cute and adorable. It involves nine year old Russell Capper sending a letter to President Nixon in which he proposes a day be nominated to celebrate grandparents. Although his initial proposal was denied on the grounds that the president can only "designate periods for special observance only when a Congressional resolution authorizes him to do so," Granparents' Day did eventually go on to become a thing in the 70s, in the USA to begin with anyway.
And, perhaps thanks to globalisation, Grandparents' Day has since spread to many more countries around the world. At Clare Florist, we think this is a good thing! Mums and Dads get their own days, so why shouldn't grandparents!?
So this Sunday the 6th of October is a great excuse (not that you should need one!) to reach out to your grandparents. If you're not close enough to visit why not phone them up for a catch up.
